For decades now, the de facto policy regarding guns on college campuses is that they’re completely prohibited. Students are expected to never carry a gun on campus, and they’re typically not allowed to keep them in dorms either.
All this policy remains intact at universities around the country, despite the fact that gun violence on college campuses is skyrocketing, and it’s causing conservatives to rethink why colleges prohibit guns on campus.
If guns aren’t allowed on campus, yet any student who wants badly enough to commit a violent crime can easily break the rules and bring one onto university property anyway, then what you end up with are a bunch of 18 to 23-year-old sitting ducks. It creates the perfect environment to carry out a mass shooting, and it’s no wonder why we’ve seen it happen again and again.
Well, one university is saying enough is enough, and they’re taking a big stand on gun rights for their students.
The college is a private Christian university in Lynchburg, VA called Liberty University, and after a recent policy change students there are now allowed to exercise their right to carry right on campus, even concealed if they have the appropriate permit. Furthermore, students will also be allowed to store their firearms in dorm rooms.
Conservative Tribune has more:
Students at one Christian university will be able to sleep easier knowing they are better protected, thanks to a policy change that allows them to keep concealed weapons in their living quarters.
Next fall, Liberty University in Virginia will allow students with concealed handgun permits that are recognized by the state to keep their weapons in their dorms.
Previously, the policy allowed students over 21 to carry concealed weapons on campus, but they were not allowed to keep them in residence halls. Weapons had to be stored in a “secured container or compartment in their vehicle while on university property.”
That policy change was proposed by University President Jerry Falwell Jr. and was given the authorization by the university’s board of trustees last week.
The university will provide safes for students to keep their weapons in while they are in dorms.
Falwell told students and faculty during a convocation on Dec. 9, 2015, that the policy change resulted from theVirginia Tech shooting.
“More than 30 innocent students and facility were just murdered viciously, and none of them had the ability to protect themselves,” he said, according to The Lynchburg News and Advance.
Falwell also urged students to arm themselves and reminded them that the university offers free concealed carry classes. He added that students should be ready to teach radical Islamists a lesson should they ever come to the university and try to start trouble.
Wow, if only we could get a few other colleges to follow Liberty’s lead. But with the overwhelming liberal presence in mainstream academia, it’s probably best not to hold your breath.
