The burqa is one outfit that has caused a lot of controversy in Western countries, with many arguing that the garb is oppressive to women. Now, the burqa and other forms of full face coverings are set to be banned in yet another country, and women everywhere are cheering — or should be.
According to the Danish publication, DR, a parliament meeting on Friday ended with a majority of the lawmakers saying that they would vote in favor of banning the burqa and niqab.
While this decision did not happen in the United States, it’s important to Americans because of where it did happen — traditionally liberal Denmark, which has received numerous refugees from Muslim-majority nations.
If Denmark did vote to ban the Islamic garb, it would be joining other countries in the European Union such as France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria, that have imposed similar bans. It would also be a sign that yet another normally liberal country recognizes the danger of unchecked immigration from cultures that do not accept Western norms.
Americans definitely have a stake in that argument.
“Oppression of women is extremely illiberal,” Jan E. Jørgensen of the Danish Left party reportedly told the publication. “On the other hand, it’s also extremely illiberal to tell people what they can and can’t wear.”
